Nick Sloane, lead engineer for Titan Salvage, the Pompano Beach, FL-based company in charge of salvaging the wreckage of the Costa Concordia, told reporters Monday the team will only have one shot at parbuckling the ill-fated ship.

The complicated removal operation has been underway since early last year after the cruise ship slammed into granite rocks off the Italian island of Giglio on January 13, 2012, killing 32 people.
The project calls for dozens of crane-like pulleys flanking the ship to slowly start tilting the vessel upright at a rate of 3 meters (yards) per hour.
On Monday several welders moved like Spiderman on the now horizontal hull, securing the steel pieces which will function like hooks to fasten the 17,000-ton steel chains looped under the wreck to help pull it upright. So far 18 chains have been laid, with the remaining four to be put in place over the next few days.

In addition, large tanks, or caissons, have been attached to the exposed port side hull, adding stabilizing weight. Once Concordia is righted, additional caissons will be attached to the starboard side and the tanks will be filled with air to help float the vessel off the rocks. It will then be towed away for demolition.

Citing extenuating circumstances such as inclement weather the salvage crew faced and the fact the ship's own weight is steadily crushing it onto the seabed, Sloane stated the one-time-only attempt to right the Concordia is scheduled for September. He added, once the process is begun, "We cannot put it back [down and start over]."

We wish everyone involved the best of luck and hope for a safe and successful operation!
