Before You Board That Uber Boat, Ask The Captain If He Has A License
USCG Issues Holiday Weekend Safety Reminder

With year-end festivities already underway, the Coast Guard took a moment on Wednesday to remind everyone of some key factors to safe boating. Along with standard safety guidelines such as life jackets and sobriety, the USCG noted that operators of boats for hire must hold a valid Merchant Mariner Credential (captain's license) adding,

"This includes captains using smart phone apps to provide boating services."

This is obviously in response to the advent of so-called "Uber boats" and other similar services in South Florida and we are pleased to see the Coast Guard making the point. Without belaboring same, not all "boat drivers" are licensed (nor do they need to be when operating small vessels under purely recreational circumstances). However, if s/he is accepting fare-paying passengers, your helmsman must have the proper credentials readily available for inspection. Don't assume; just ask.

Coast Guard to public: Be safe this holiday weekend

So, enjoy the water this weekend, mates. And remember: if you need a licensed captain, don't hesitate to contact us.
