Solo Row A No-Go
Sonya Baumstein Terminates Trans-Pacific Trip

Well, we were all looking forward to Sonya Baumstein's solo trans-Pacific row from Japan to San Francisco but, unfortunately, she's had to terminate the trip after 8 days at sea.

Citing concerns about equipment failures, heavy traffic (she'd already narrowly avoided a collision with a fishing vessel) and bad weather, Baumstein and her shore team decided to pull the plug before rowing beyond the Japanese Coast Guard's ability to reach her. A wise choice, no doubt.

After activating a distress signal on Saturday, Baumstein was rescued by a nearby freighter about 155 miles off Japan. According to a statement from her manager, no decision has been made yet about another attempt.
